RSS Feed?

One for Tony really, but I was wondering what the chances of an RSS feed appearing may be? I know I'd find it useful, but it's definitely a luxury not an essential, and I don't know how many other people would use it!

RSS output is possible, but as the only forum that is publicly accessible is this forum, would there still be a need for it? To have full forum access you would need to authenticate your session via the reader, not sure if any readers do that as I don't use them. What reader do you use?

Mmmm! I think I sort of understand the previous messages.

How about opening up a basic HTML education post so that us mortals can understand a little about how the site works :?:

What did you have in mind Derman?

With respect to RSS Feeds, they are effectively notifications (like emails) that are periodically updated with content from a specified site. That way you are informed when posts arrive, and their content, without actually browsing through the pages. As Tony rightly pointed out, the problem is that most of this forum is hidden unless you are logged in, so an RSS feed would be of extremely limited use, since it would not check the majority of the pages.

What sort of thing did you want to know?

The site is built using PHP (http://www.php.net) and outputs HTML so browsers can display the pages. The forum is a bespoke open source application (http://www.phpbb.com v3 - only just released) integrated into the sites design.

Rick asked for the forum posts to be available in an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) reader (thats an external application that can take a 'feed' from a site and display it) - the problem there was that the forums are not available to guests - you have to register to view, so allowing RSS would mean the forum would have to be made available to view by all (we of course take privacy seriously).

The forums do have BB codes similar to HTML, so you can 'tart' up your posts:

This is BOLD, this is RED
You can also add flash content and images :)
