Salt intake help

Postby micadantas » Sat Apr 29, 2017 8:41 pm

Hello everyone! I'm a mom of a month old boy with classic CAH salt wasting. His (AMAZING) pediatric endocrinologist requested to give him 1/2 tsp daily; mixing with his milk (he's exclusively breastfed) he absolutely hates and do not drink if we add salt; even if is just a little added to his bottle
Anyone has any tips to help on how to give him salt daily??

This is probably the hardest question to answer, as I don't really believe there is a satisfactory solution! The sodium chloride solution does taste foul and although mixing it with milk to dilute it may make it a bit more palatable, it still won't taste very nice. Some parents just put it into their babies mouth in a syringe and then try and feed them, to take the taste away but until they are on solids, there is no real easy way to get this down a baby.

The good news is that the sodium chloride is only given in the early months and once a child is on solid foods, they do wean them off it and most babies are able to stop it completely before they are a year old. I know that may seem a long time away for you yet though so in the meantime you just have to do your best to get your little one to take it - I am sure every parent reading your message will empathise, as we know it isn't easy!

My baby does take it with the milk providing it's the right ratio on the other hand he does try to spit out the fludrocortizone I've found that if I give him the vitamins at the same time he doesn't spit out so maybe using the vitamins flavour to hide the sodium flavour....good luck Mum

I had to help my friend while she was having a baby and then she faced the same problem.
:( :(
I was so busy helping her, I had to get my research papers done online.
