The study requires participants to attend the clinical research facility for one day only for fasting blood tests, an IQ test and an MRI brain scan.

The short title of this study is NESH which stands for Neural Effects of Steroid Hormones and (in brief) aims to see whether some of the hormone changes that take place in CAH affect brain development. I don’t recall having read about a similar study before, which makes this one quite interesting! The inclusion and exclusion criteria is below:

Inclusion criteria
* Patients with known classic CAH due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency confirmed by hormonal and genetic testing
* Female aged 18-50 years

Exclusion criteria
* Hypothyroidism
* Pregnancy
* Presence of history of medical conditions known to affect cerebral anatomy
* Metal in the body or any other reasons to prevent MRI scanning

If you are interested or would like to know more, please contact me (sue@cah.org.uk) for an invitation letter and Patient Information Sheet which includes the details of whom to contact should you wish to participate. Obviously there is no obligation – the choice is yours!
